Technical Apparel Designer

Reports to: Director of Design & Product Development

Full Time: 20-25 hours per week (Part-Time employment with the opportunity to move to Full-Time )

Our rapidly growing business is in need of a Technical Designer who can support our design team at our Austin, TX office.

What You’ll Do

This role will support the Design Director & help to oversee 1 assistant technical designer. You will also work closely with the Product Development team. Tasks may include but are not limited to:

Client Relationships

Act as a primary point of contact for AJG clients, providing expert technical guidance and timely communication to build long-term, dependable partnerships.


Proactively identify savings through thoughtful design adjustments, trim counter-sourcing, shipment consolidation, and the reduction of sample iterations.

Drive efficiency across the entire production lifecycle by anticipating bottlenecks and implementing forward-thinking solutions to streamline the process.

Deliver premium support throughout the design-to-delivery pipeline, ensuring all client needs are met with high-level technical expertise and professional integrity.


Apparel & Technical Design


Create development and production tech packs, including measurements, technical sketches, garment construction details, etc

Communicate any potential issues on developments to client in a timely manner & offer solutions

Lead fit sessions on a live model or mannequin.

Ensure fit is standardized across brands as per client requirements

Prepare sample for fit session, measuring and recording information via google docs or Backbone PLM system & taking detailed photographs of garments

Ensure accurate notes and digital pictures are taken during fit sessions, and integrate notes into clear fit comments.

Catalog, track, store, & maintain samples with proper labeling and storage.

Review/approve lab dips and print strike offs against color standards. Clearly communicate comments to clients and vendors.

Communicate daily with both clients and overseas factories, via in-person and virtual meetings, as well as email, slack and whatsapp as needed, in a professional manner that reflects the client-centric values of AJG.

Must be able to work in-person at our Austin, TX, but be comfortable working with employees & Managers who are off-site or work remotely.

Must be available during regular business hours.



Organize and prioritize workload to meet all deadlines

Stay up to date with industry standards on compliance & testing regulations

Oversee assistant designer as necessary


Education/Expertise


College Degree in Apparel, Fashion, or Technical Design

At least 3 Years of relevant experience

Proficiency with Excel, Google Sheets, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop a plus

PLM experience a plus (Centric, Backbone)

Sewing skills or Knowledge of garment construction, understanding of basic sewing operations, understanding of basic pattern-making & grading

Multi-tasker with a “can-do” attitude and ability to shift priorities when needed

Experience creating technical flats & CADs in Adobe Illustrator

Graphic Design and Textile Design capabilities a plus
